Teen Driver Injures 1year Old, Parents in Car Accident

According to a report from CBS Boston, police are investigating a car versus pedestrian crash which left one couple and their 1 year old child injured. The driver in the accident, which happened in the South End, was reported to have been a seventeen year old.

On October 6th, the couple was out for a Sunday afternoon walk, pushing their one year old in a stroller near Columbus Avenue and Dartmouth Street. They were stuck by a car while crossing the street at about 3:15 pm by a female teenaged driver whose name has not been released. Police spokeswoman, Nicole Grant, stated that the child did not sustain serious injury, and was taken to Tufts Medical Center, where the baby was treated and then released to family members. The couple, both in their 30s, were listed in serious condition.

According to reports, the father sustained head and leg injuries and was taken to Tufts Medical Center while the mother was taken to Israel Deaconess Medical Center with head and neck trauma. The names of the family was not released. Grant revealed that the 17 year old driver had a junior driver’s license and would be cited for the crash. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. No one else was injured in the car accident, although after hitting the family, the car hit a pole at the corner of Lawrence and Dartmouth streets and then struck a brownstone. The pole was broken in half and uprooted.

As witnesses were interviewed at the scene, a gray and orange stroller sat empty in the street. Neighbors were visibly shaken as one clung to another for support. Twenty-seven year old Ambika Garg expressed how “scary” the accident was for the neighborhood, “because we cross here everyday.” She stated that she heard the sound of screeching brakes and the screaming from her apartment on the third floor. Garg says that the intersection can be difficult due to the fact that drivers often stop short for pedestrians who are in the cross walk. She was hit crossing the street just a year ago, although she sustained light injuries and did not file a report.

Drunk Driving Accident Revere

Each year, there are over 10,000 people killed in America due to drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 40% of drivers who were involved in fatal car accidents in 2008 tested positive for alcohol. In the year 1982 alone, almost 700 people were killed in the state of Massachusetts in accidents which involved drunk driving. In 2010, in just one month’s time, there were four state troopers from Massachusetts injured as a result of drivers who were drinking. Statistics like these have led to increased efforts throughout the state to stop drunk driving.

Unfortunately, the Revere area is no stranger to drunk driving accidents. Often, cases involving drunk driving in Revere can involve drivers with multiple offenses. For example, just this month a Winthrop woman, 32 year old Amanda Bizeur, plead guilty for two counts of causing serious bodily harm while drunk driving in Revere. Injured in the accident were two sons of Ward 5 Councilor John Powers. It was not her first offense. Ten years ago while drinking and driving, she caused an accident in Florida, severely injuring a New York City police officer.

Councilor Ward shared with the Revere Journal, “She got 2 ½ years in jail, but my son has been in the hospital for 22 months because of what she did. In all probability, he’ll be there awhile longer. He just had another operation and will have another one in the near future. This whole thing is a tragedy for my boys, for their families and for this woman’s family. I sincerely hope this time she takes the time to reflect and get some counseling, which she really needs.” Bizeur fled the scene of the accident and continued drunk driving in Revere, while the two brothers were being removed from their car with the Jaws of Life.

In cases such as this, the victims are often left with mounting medical bills, lost time from work, and even death. It can be devastating for the families, while the drivers seem to get away very easily.
