According to a report from CBS Boston, police are investigating a car versus pedestrian crash which left one couple and their 1 year old child injured. The driver in the accident, which happened in the South End, was reported to have been a seventeen year old.
On October 6th, the couple was out for a Sunday afternoon walk, pushing their one year old in a stroller near Columbus Avenue and Dartmouth Street. They were stuck by a car while crossing the street at about 3:15 pm by a female teenaged driver whose name has not been released. Police spokeswoman, Nicole Grant, stated that the child did not sustain serious injury, and was taken to Tufts Medical Center, where the baby was treated and then released to family members. The couple, both in their 30s, were listed in serious condition.
According to reports, the father sustained head and leg injuries and was taken to Tufts Medical Center while the mother was taken to Israel Deaconess Medical Center with head and neck trauma. The names of the family was not released. Grant revealed that the 17 year old driver had a junior driver’s license and would be cited for the crash. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. No one else was injured in the car accident, although after hitting the family, the car hit a pole at the corner of Lawrence and Dartmouth streets and then struck a brownstone. The pole was broken in half and uprooted.
As witnesses were interviewed at the scene, a gray and orange stroller sat empty in the street. Neighbors were visibly shaken as one clung to another for support. Twenty-seven year old Ambika Garg expressed how “scary” the accident was for the neighborhood, “because we cross here everyday.” She stated that she heard the sound of screeching brakes and the screaming from her apartment on the third floor. Garg says that the intersection can be difficult due to the fact that drivers often stop short for pedestrians who are in the cross walk. She was hit crossing the street just a year ago, although she sustained light injuries and did not file a report.
